I started my school life at the age of six. At first the school for me, a boy, meant play, play and more play instead of sitting in the classroom and learning something. However, I changed the way I used to behave at school with the help of my teachers. I tried my best to do well in my schoolwork and follow the school rules.

Growing and learning were great fun. Every year we had different kinds of school trips. Not only could we learn many things from them, but also we were given many projects (課題) as homework. Passage 2

Yesterday we arrived in Phuket, an island in Thailand, and started the first beach Christmas holiday in my life.

We left early this morning and rode elephants through the beautiful Thai jungle. At 3:00pm we started to drive back to the hotel. We realized that something was wrong. The first thing we noticed was the wail (尖嘯(xiao)聲) of police and ambulance sirens. As we drove closer to the beach, more and more people passed us on the road, in cars, on bicycles and on foot. They all looked terrified and some were carrying many things.

We stopped at a roadside restaurant where people were standing around a TV. As we climbed out of our car, we were shocked to see that several of the women and even some of the men were crying. Then we turned to the screen and watched in horror as the morning's events were reported.

I didn't know what a tsunami (海嘯) was. The news said that the earthquake was one of the largest that had been recorded. The earthquake lasted for eight minutes. Somehow, this earthquake had caused huge waves to roll across the Indian Ocean and hit Thailand. The huge waves destroyed hotels, cars, and everything else they met.

Passage 3

An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning he was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his holy(圣書) book. One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the holy book just like you but I don't understand it, and I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?"

The grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal（媒） basket down to the river and bring back a basket of water."

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket （桶(tong)）instead. The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water, I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough." The boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather, the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless."       

"So you think it is useless." The old man said, "Look at the basket." The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been changed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and outside.

So, that's what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and outside.

Passage 4

Half a year before graduating from college, my son Kain began to look for a job and soon got an interview. There were only three people for the final interview. The interview was very simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. The interviewer said to them, "All of you are very good. Please go home and wait for our response. Three days later, Kain received a message from the company saying that he had not been offered a job. He felt deeply disappointed. But later in the evening he told me that he had received another message saying that he had been employed (雇傭) by the company.

Actually the first message sent to Kain was also part of the test in the interview. The three men received the same message, but only my son's reply satisfied the company, so he was given the job. I asked Kain, "How did all of you reply?" He said, "One did not reply; the other said 'goodbye', and I said' thank you'."

Only then did I know that my son's job came in that way. It also makes me know when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say "thank you" to the one who disappoints you. Saying "thank you" shows respect for others' work and shows your grand generosity (寬宏大量)- Therefore, while under the same condition, you may get more chances than others.

At present, man’s living environment is being ruined, and beautiful nature is no longer so beautiful. Protection of wild life is protection of man himself.
